Augusto Marín nació en San Juan de Puerto Rico en el 1921 y hoy se le honra como uno de los pintores puertorriqueños de mayor relevancia en la segunda mitad del siglo XX. A la temprana edad de 12 años su talento le mereció una beca para estudiar dibujo en el taller del reconocido artista español Alejandro Sánchez Felipe. Mientras servía en la Segunda Guerra Mundial (1943-1945), creó a "Polito", un personaje de tirillas cómicas publicado en el periódico El Mundo, que, describía las experiencias del soldado puertorriqueño en el Ejército Norteamericano.
De 1949 a 1955 cursó estudios superiores en pintura, dibujo y diseño en la Liga de Estudiantes de Arte de Nueva York, bajo la tutela de artistas reconocidos como Harry Stenberg, Iván Olinsky, John Corbino y Reginald Marsh. Continuó sus estudios en el Instituto de Arte Otis, en Los Angeles, donde se especializó en diseño de mural.
Luego estudió vitrales policromados con el gran maestro Arnaldo Maas, en San Juan, perfeccionando más adelante su técnica de vitral en el Taller de Henri Mesterom, en Maastrich, Holanda. Completó sus estudios en el 1983 al finalizar el curso de litografía en piedra de la Escuela Graduada de Bellas Artes de la Universidad de Notre Dame, en Indiana.
Fungió por 15 años como profesor de pintura y diseño en la Escuela de Bellas Artes del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, en San Juan, y en el 1987 culminó sus labores como profesor en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Colegio Regional de Carolina.
Los murales de Marín brindan gran carácter y belleza a edificios públicos y privados en Puerto Rico, tales como: el Centro de Bellas Artes Luis A. Ferré, en Santurce, el condominio Surfside Mansions, en Isla Verde, el centro comercial Laguna Gardens, en Carolina, el edificio de la compañía Searle, en Caguas, Departamento de la Vivienda en Hato Rey, Murales Escuela Juan Ramón Jimenez en Bayamón y las facilidades del Colegio de Abogados, en Miramar.
Sus trabajos se han presentado en más de 70 exposiciones en Puerto Rico, México, Alemania, Mónaco y Estados Unidos, y han recibido premios nacionales e internacionales. Hoy día Marín se exhibe en colecciones privadas y en museos, tales como: el Museo Metropolitano de Arte, de Nueva York, el Museo de Arte Moderno, de Nueva York, el Museo de Bellas Artes, de San Juan, el Museo de Arte de Ponce, el Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, Museo del Barrio Nueva York, el Museo de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, el Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, el Ateneo Puertorriqueño, Museo de Arte de Bayamón y la Colección Internacional de Arte Robert Kemm, en Beverly Hills, California. Fué otorgado el Premio Nacional de la Cultura 2004 del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña.
En los últimos años ha trabajado varias esculturas, litografías y serigrafías en Pietra Santa (Italia), París y México. Actualmente continúa forjando su gran legado artístico por medio de estas ediciones gráficas, aportando así al crecimiento y evolución de la cultura puertorriqueña y latinoamericana.

Augusto Marín was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1921, and today he is considered one of the greatest Puerto Rican painters of the 20th century. At the age of twelve his talent earned him a scholarship to study painting at the workshop of a well-known Spanish artist, Sánchez Felipe. While serving in the Army during World World II (1943-1945), he created Polito, a comic strip published in the newspaper El Mundo. Marín used this strip to describe the experiences of the Puerto Rican soldier and his daily life in the American military.
From 1949 to 1955 he took courses in advanced studies in painting, drawing and design at the Arts Students League of New York, under the tutelage of renowned artists such as Harry Stenberg, Ivan Olinsky, John Corbino and Reginald Marsh. Marín continued his studies at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, where he specialized in mural design. He later studied stained glass techniques with the master Arnaldo Maas in San Juan, perfecting this craft later in the workshop of Henri Mesterom in Maastrich, Holland. Marín finally completed his lengthy art education in 1983, when he took a graduate course in lithography at the University of Notre Dame. He also had an academic career. He served as a professor of painting and design at the School of Fine Arts of the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture in San Juan, and in 1987 began teaching as a professor at the University of Puerto Rico's Carolina campus.
Marín's murals give great character and beauty to public and private buildings all over Puerto Rico. Some of these can be found at the following locations: the Luis A. Ferré Center of Fine Arts in Santurce, the Surfside Mansions condominium in Isla Verde, the commercial center at Laguna Gardens in Carolina, the Searle building in Caguas and the Colegio de Abogados complex in Miramar.
Marín's work has been presented in more than seventy expositions in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Germany, Monaco and the United States, and these have received international prizes and acclaim. Today his art is exhibited in private collections and museums, such as: the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, the Puerto Rico Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico, the Museum of the University of Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture and the Puerto Rican Arts and Sciences Association in San Juan; the Museum of Art in Ponce; and the International Collection of Robert Kemm in Beverly Hills, California. He was awarded the 2004 National Prize of Culture by the Puerto Rican Institute of Culture.
In his later years, Marín has worked on various sculptures, lithography and silk screens in Pietra Santa, Paris and Mexico. He continues to forge his great artistic legacy by means of graphic editions of his work, in this manner contributing to the growth and evolution of Puerto Rican and Latin American culture.
